Presentation Description
Institution: Monash Health - Victoria, Australia
Purpose: Over the last two decades the rate of publication from vascular surgeons in Australia and New Zealand has steadily increased. However during the COVID pandemic, elective operating was heavily restricted during 2020 and 2022. This study aimed to understand the trends of publication, before, during and after the pandemic by vascular surgeons in Australia and New Zealand.
Methodology: A current list of vascular surgeons working within Australia and New Zealand was compiled through correlating AHPRA registered subspecialty vascular surgeons with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons ‘Find Me a Surgeon’ website tool. A PubMed search of each vascular surgeons publications pre-COVID (2018 to 2019), during COVID (2020 to 2022) and post-COVID (2023 to June 2024) was performed by two independent reviewers. Data included date of publication, type of study and level of research evidence.
Results: In the study period, a total of 168 vascular surgeons published 1395 articles, with 368 articles having multiple vascular surgeons as coauthors, resulting in 1027 unique publications. Between 2018 and 2020 there was an increase in publication rate from 113 papers to 135 papers. There was a 36% increase in publication rate between 2020 and 2021 associated with the COVID pandemic, with publication rates remaining increased post COVID. Between 2018 to 2024, 97 systematic reviews and meta-analysis and 214 case reports were published. During COVID, the number of systematic reviews and meta-analysis increased from 6% of publications to 10% of publications. 9 authors published more than 30 publications, where the median number of publications was 3. The top ten authors published 49% of articles between 2018 and 2024.
Conclusion: Overall during the COVID pandemic, vascular surgeons were publishing a greater amount than the general trend of publications over time.
