Presentation Description

Institution: Royal Hobart Hospital - Tasmania, Australia

Traumatic aortic injuries are rare with potentially catastrophic outcomes. These injuries are even more uncommon in a paediatric population with research limited to case reports. Here, we present a case of traumatic abdominal aortic transection in a 7-year-old boy following a high-speed motor vehicle accident. His abdominal aorta was repaired in an open approach with a dacron interposition graft and he recovered well post-operatively with no major complications. A review of literature surrounding paediatric abdominal aortic injury reveals the scarcity of research as well as the compensatory nature of the paediatric vascular system with many children who survive the initial injury, having minimal long-term vascular complications following open aortic repair.
