Presentation Description

Introduction In-patient falls, particularly falls with harm (such as fracture or head injury) are an ongoing challenge in the hospital setting. Latest World Falls Guidelines(1) recommend multifactorial assessment and intervention for patients at risk of falling in hospital. Patients with vascular conditions are particularly vulnerable to falls. They commonly have significant co-morbidities and physical and sensory deficits which add to their risk of falling. There is a need for targeted assessment and management of these patients to optimise their safety and recovery during admission. Physiotherapists have a key role to play in this alongside the wider MDT. Activity This presentation will outline the key risk factors for falls amongst vascular patients and present recommended best practice for assessment, intervention, and MDT management of at-risk patients during their hospital stay. Falls related data from our hospital will be presented to show the depth of the issue. A case study with real world examples of management strategies will be presented outlining clinical implications for practice. Conclusion Vascular patients commonly also present with known risk factors for falling and as such are vulnerable to experiencing falls and potential harm from falls during a hospital admission. This presentation will provide up-to-date knowledge and information for the assessment and management of these patients in order to reduce risk of falls and optimise outcomes for such patients.
